Mali, Dogon Peoples, Carved Wood Mother And Child Figure, Ca. Early 20th C., H 28" W 5" | Figure has very rich patina, which may reflect use as an altar and the focus of prayer and offerings. Seated female figure wearing a necklace and matching arm bands, holding a child on her lap. Dogon mother-and-child figures were often a physical representation of a woman's desire to create new life. This figure sits on a stool of two standing figures, with her feet resting on a raised block. Could possibly date to the late 19th century. Figure is mounted on a modern black base.

Condition Report: Some losses to patina, mainly on child figure and female figure's legs. Bottom piece of figure's coiffure may have been reattached at some point in the past. The back of the child figure also appears to have been reattached at some point in the past, as there is a visible seam.
