Exceptional museum pieces (similar ‘vintage’ pieces were part of the collections of Centre Pompidou in Paris and Mo. MA in New York just acquired several this year) . This was the reference system used by Malick Sidibé for ordering prints. Most of the photographs in his folders don’t exist in any other form, the prints were not ordered and the negatives often did not survive. These folders provide a unique insight into social life in Bamako, Mali in the 1960s and 1970s. Regarding Malick Sidibé’s vintage prints (excerpt from the ‘Mali Twist’ exhibition at the Cartier Foundation) : ‘I displayed [these prints] in front of the studio where the young people met. It was like being at the cinema. Some people ordered prints without buying them, the most important thing was that the photos were seen. ’ Ordered by Bamako youngsters dressed in the latest fashions, these prints preserve memories of joyful and fun moments, where these young people discovered their own images enlarged by their ‘friend’ Malick Sidibé.
