Mallet Du Pan Jacques. On the Danger of Political Balance, or An Exposition of the Causes That Have Undermined the Balance of Power in the North Since Catherine II’s Accession to the Russian Throne. Warsaw 1790. Published and printed by Michał Gröll, p. 150, vignettes, end-leaf woodcuts, 8°, 19th-century half-leather binding with gilded title on the spine.

E.XVII, 474; E.XXV, 194–195. A piece from the Radziechowska Library of Count Badenich ( stamps, ownership label). Printed by Michał Gröll. An anonymously published work whose authorship has been attributed to, among others: King Gustav III of Sweden, Adrian Heinrich von Borcke—a Prussian envoy in Stockholm, Claude Charles de Peyssonel, and Johan Fredrik von Nolcken—the Swedish minister in St. Petersburg. The pamphlet was published in 1789 in French, German, and English; the Polish translation was done by Antoni Bieńkowski. The pamphlet was directed against Russia’s actions and exposed Catherine II’s expansionist policies; in Poland, it was distributed primarily by supporters of the Polish-Prussian alliance. Estreicher notes: “On February 28, 1790, Żórawski wrote from Czudnów to Morzkowski, the vice-starost of the Zhytomyr court: ‘I have an interesting little book titled *On the Danger of Political Influence*... This is the very same book for which Stackelberg wanted to give Gröll a hundred lashes, and which he later tried to buy back in Warsaw...”. There are some stains on the title page and numerous underlinings in the text; otherwise, it is in good condition.
