Mallica 'Kapo' Reynolds (Jamaican/Jamaica) Solomon, Dated 1969
Mallica 'Kapo' Reynolds (Jamaican, 1911-1989) Solomon, dated 1969, carved lignum vitae wood, signed, dated and titled on underside. Size: 28.5'' x 11.5'' x 8.5'' (72 x 29 x 22 cm). Provenance: Acquired in the late 1960's by the present owner directly from the artist's home studio in Jamaica.
Per the artists: After Solomon was pulled from the rubble of a construction accident, he was asked, "Where does it hurt?" He responded, "Here and here," indicating his chest and his back. This moment became the subject of Kapo's work.
While on a family vacation, in the late 1960s, the current owner spotted Kapo's work in a local establishment and was able to visit his home studio. The family purchased several Kapo paintings and sculptures.
An "Intuitive," Kapo created sculpture and paintings presenting Jamaica’s spiritualist strengths. The National Gallery of Jamaica has a gallery dedicated to his work. From early in his career, prominent galleries featured his art, including Juster (NY), 1959, and Just Above Midtown (1975). The Setedlijk Museum, Amsterdam, acquired Kapo's Dark Madonna for their permanent collection (1978 accession).
