Mami wata - Water Goddess - Fon - Benin

[ translate ]

Large Voodoo altar statuette, Fon culture, Benin. H. 75cm

Beautiful and large Voodoo altar statue from Benin dedicated to the water goddess Mami Wata. She is consulted and revered for her powers. It can help in matters like fertility, wealth, prosperity, love and health.
She is a mermaid, the upper body is human and the lower body is animal. She seems caught by her task, her gaze is illuminated, hypnotic. She holds in her hands a cup for offerings, two snakes climb on it; two others climb up behind his back. Snakes are symbols of Mami Wata. It is an object that shines, it seems alive, the sculptor knew how to breathe life into his work. Slots visible in the photos sold as is. A beautiful old and authentic Voodoo collector's item. Circa 1960.
