Mamie Eisenhower Lengthy ALS & Signed Envelope Re: European Travels
ALS

A lengthy handwritten letter from First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. 6pp on three sheets, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", Gettysburg, dated October 13, 1962. Signed "Mamie E" on personal stationery, addressed to Elise Ellis. Accompanied by a hand-addressed envelope, signed on verso "Mrs Eisenhower/Gettysburg/Pa." The letter covers a wide array of topics, from suffering an injury in France to sightseeing in Denmark and Ireland, celebrating her husband's 72nd birthday, and much more. The letter has flattened mail folds. Dampstaining throughout has caused some ink bleeding, not affecting Mamie's signature. Light wear to the letter and expected wear to the envelope. Both boldly signed.

Highlights from the letter include:
"?After I hurt my arm in Paris I couldn't even write Post cards. I had planned so many things for France?Ike and the children did lots of sightseeing tho. So far as I am concerned I never care to go abroad again. Did enjoy seeing garden where my maternal grandparents were born and meeting cousins far removed. Denmark was nice to see again and this time we really were tourists. Climbed castle steps and walked cobble stones. Ireland was interesting but I saw no thatched cottages like I expected?Tomorrow we celebrate Ike's 72nd birthday with dinner at John's?As you have read Ike has been busy politicing. He is so concerned over the state of the country he felt he must get out and help altho I think it too much for him. He still has six more speeches to make. Have been to Washington several times recently? We have been so worried about Al Gruenther. He went into Walter Reed with pneumonia and so many other things went wrong that they had sent for the sons. He has small chance to recover but we are all praying hard for him?A week ago to-day we were in Baltimore for Ruth Eisenhower's wedding. She married a young Dr from John Hopkins who is outstanding radiologist. Milton very pleased. He did everything he thought Helen would like to make it a beautiful wedding?"

Following his presidency, Eisenhower and Mamie sailed for Europe for an extensive, thirty-day trip, which would be Eisenhower's first trip there as a private citizen since 1929. General Alfred Maximilian Gruenther (1899-1983) was a senior United States Army officer and Red Cross president who served in the army throughout the interwar period and into World War II. At the age of 52, he became the second youngest four-star general in the history of the United States Army, after only Douglas MacArthur.
