The iconic work of Man Ray (1890-1976) entitled 'Le Gift' (the Gift) . Man Ray's career underwent a transition from the Dadaism of New York to the Surrealism of Paris in the 1920s. Le Gift fits very well into both art movements. It is an amalgamation of objects from different worlds that were originally unrelated. The nails transform this household appliance into an alienating object, which loses its original function. The first copy was stolen during the exhibition in Paris in 1921 and has never been found again. Copies of this edition can be found in various museums worldwide.
