Property from the Ina Puri Collection
Manjit Bawa (Indian, 1941-2008)
Untitled
signed Manjit lower left
print
42.9 x 62.9cm (16 7/8 x 24 3/4in).
Provenance
Property from a private collection, India.
Acquired from the artist in the late 1990s.

2023 marks 15 years since Manjit Bawa passed away, and Bonhams has the immense pleasure to announce that his dearest friend and biographer, Ina Puri, will be holding a retrospective of his works at Bonhams in June 2023, to commemorate the occasion.

This print is important because it was made in 1998/1999, when he had an exhibition at Santiniketan. It was a one-off exhibition curated by Jogen Chowdhury at a when exhibitions were far and few in between. Here, he showcased his miniatures and drawings and Manjit's guru's, K.G Subramanyan and Somnath Hore came to this exhibition. This incredibly rare print was specifically made to advertise the show.

The print is quintessentially Manjit. His seminal motif of the interaction between man and animal takes centre stage, albeit devoid of the bright colours of his oils. He brings out the essence of both animal and man, and the influence of Sufism and Pahari miniatures are elegantly on display.

To see another print sold from the same collection see Bonhams, Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art Online Only, 20th - 28th February 2023, lot 6.
