Manner of Adam Frans van der Meulen, early 19th century- Louis XIV at the taking of Besançon; oil on board, bears old inscribed label on the reverse, 67.6 x 51 cm., (unframed). Provenance: The estate of the late designer Anthony Powell. Note: The present work is presumably inspired by van der Meulen's portrait of Louis XIV at the Siege of Besançon, 1674 (Hermitage, St Petersburg no.??-675), with some compositional differences. Van der Meulen produced a number of military paintings depicting prominent figures on horseback.
