Manner of Pierre Gobert, O/C Portrait of a Young Lady

Manner of Pierre Gobert (French, 1662-1744), oil on canvas oval portrait depicting a young lady with powdered wig in elaborately embroidered lace trimmed gown, with ermine and blue silk robe emblazoned with gilt fleur-di-lis designs. The half length portrait depicts the young woman standing, with a red drape in the background. Elaborate antique oval gesso carved frame with carved floral and shell decorations to top, bottom and sides, and incised foliate ornamentation with some red painted accents throughout. Sight- 31 1/2"H x 25"W. Frame - 40" H x 34" W. Note: this portrait is similar, particularly in the details of the dress, to Gobert's known portrait of Louise Elisabeth de Bourbon, Princesse de Conti (1693-1775). Pierre Gobert was the preferred painter of ladies of the court of Louis XIV.

Private Nashville collection, found in a Middle Tennessee estate.
Condition Report: Painting has been lined; large area of overcleaning to lower left quadrant and some lower right quadrant. Small loss to lower center, measuring 1/4". Craquelure throughout; light scratch to subject's hand. Canvas needs restretching. Frame has some wear, losses, and shrinkage cracks throughout.
