MANNER OF SAMUEL JOHN PEPLOE (1871-1935), SCOTTISH
GENTLEMAN WITH AN UPWARDS STARE IN WHITE CRAVAT

Oil on canvas; unsigned

20 ins x 16.5 ins; 50.8 cms x 41.9 cms

Provenance:
Private Collection, Ontario

Note:
In his early work, the Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe tended to paint portraits that are very similar in style to this lot. He painted in a loose hand capturing the essence of the sitter and often used a restricted palette of dark colours, as in this unsigned portrait. Peploe was influenced by the dark tones used by the Dutch painter Frans Hals whose work he had seen in the National Gallery in Edinburgh. Edouard Manet was also an influence. In 1910, Peploe moved to Paris where he, under the influence of painters like Henri Matisse, began to use brighter colours.
