[Manuscript] Alexandre DUMAS, also known as Alexandre Dumas père (Villers-Cotterêts, 1802–1870), writer.
"Events of the Night from Friday to Saturday"
Signed autograph manuscript intended for publication in one of his newspapers, such as *L’Indepediente* or *Monte-Christo*, during his stay in Naples between 1861 and 1864.
In this article, Dumas offers his opinion on the arrest of two prominent Neapolitans, agents of King Francis II. The postal service had intercepted two letters from the King ordering the Duke of Cajaniello and Mr. Trotta to stir up unrest and set fires in Naples. When the King’s agents attempted to carry out these instructions, they were arrested and taken to prison. Dumas points out that it is the party of order that resorts to riots, while the party of the Revolution strives to thwart them.
“At seven o’clock that evening, all preparations had been made by the reactionaries and, at the same time, by the police. The latter had set up a ‘mousetrap.’ Do I need to explain to my readers what a ‘mousetrap’ means in police terminology? I don’t think so.”
3 pages in-4 written in black ink on blue paper; the top margins of the pages are frayed.
