Manuscript Letter to Garcia Velloso

[ translate ]

By Ruben Dario
Two pages on letterhead "Mundial Magazine" written by the hand of a secretary and signed by Ruben Dario. In 1912 Dario accepted the offer of Uruguayan businessmen Rubén and Alfredo Guido to direct the World and Elegance magazines. To promote these publications, he set out on a tour of Latin America, visiting, among other cities, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Montevideo and Buenos Aires. It was also around this time that the poet wrote his autobiography, which appeared in the magazine Caras y Caretas with the title of La vida de Rubén Darío written by himself; and the work History of my books, very interesting for the knowledge of its literary evolution. After the end of this tour, after disengaging from his contract with the Guido brothers, he returned to Paris, and, in 1913, traveled to Mallorca invited by Joan Sureda, and stayed at the Charterhouse of Valldemosa, in which three-quarters of a century Chopin and George Sand had lived behind. On this island, Rubén began the novel El oro de Mallorca, which is, in reality, a fictionalized autobiography. However, the deterioration of his mental health, due to his alcoholism, was accentuated. In December he returned to Barcelona where he stayed at the home of General Zelaya, who had been his protector while he was president of Nicaragua. In January 1914 he returned to Paris, where he had a long fight with the Guido brothers, who still owed him an important sum of his fees. In May he settled in Barcelona, where he gave the press his last important poetic work, Canto a la Argentina and other poems, which includes the poem laudatory of the southern country that he had written years ago on behalf of La Nación. His health was already very deteriorated: he suffered from hallucinations and was obsessed with death. Provenance : Bought from the family of Velloso and this letter is reproduced in the book JUAN JOSE DE URQUIZA - La amistad de Rubén Darío y Enrique García Velloso (The friendship of Rubén Darío and Enrique García Velloso)
