Manuscript by the Mekubal Hanistar Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Friedman of Plock
Wonderful Kabbalistic Manuscript - "Sefer Emet LeYaakov and a third translation" - handwritten by the author the Mekubal the Gaon Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Friedman (Ish Shalom) of Plock - Kabbalistic work on the sanctity of Yaakov Avinu and elucidation on all Mamarei Chazal and the Zohar about him - section I - London, 1883-1888 - not published.
This is an original encyclopedic work containing all that was said by Chazal, the Zohar and the Mekubalim on Yaakov Avinu, with the author's deep elucidations, most of them Kabbalistic yet not following the tradition of the Ari and the Mekubalim.
This volume begins with Parashat Toldot, yet most of it is on Parashat Vayetze. On the last leaf, the author's introduction to the second section, on Parashat Vayishlach.
At the beginning of the work, a lengthy introduction of more than 13 pages. Some of the work is titled Maasseh Bereshit, some Maasseh Merkava and some Sodot HaTorah.
The book is in honor of "לכבוד יעקב אבינו ולכבוד בניו הצדיקים ובפרט ראובן הצדיק בנו... ולהוציא סיגים מכסף טהור מזוקק שבעתים, וגם להסיר טעות או דברים שלא כנגד כבודם ח"ו... לעמוד בחרבי ובקשתי נגד שונאיהם ושונאי המקום עשו ולבן הרשעים בפרט ועמלק ואדום הרשעים בכלל, להרים כבוד ודגל יעקב הצדיק... " (from the title page).
"... ואלקים יודע את עניי ואת יגיע כפי אשר טרחתי בעמל הפרנסה להחיות את בני ביתי והייתי בצער ובצרה כל הימים ונפשי עגומה עלי כל ימי, עד בשנת תרג"ם [=תרמ"ג] לאלף הששי שנפלתי על ערש דוי אז, ותחל רוח ד' לפעם אותי בפתע פתאום ויעירנו כאיש אשר יעיר משנתו ויאמר לי שא נא עיניך וראה הכלה הנעימה וחמודה אילת אהבים ספר אמת ליעקב ותרגום שלישי... " (from the introducton, p. 10. Later in his introduction, the author describes the difficult conditions under which he wrote the work).
We do not have much information about the author, only what he told about himself at length in the introduction to section I and II. According to the introduction, he was an orphan born in Plock, Poland, who escaped in the 1830s so as not to be recruited to the Russian army. He travelled from place to place until he reached London. The content of the work indicates he was a wise Gavra Rava, possibly a Tzaddik Nistar.
