Early edition of this pocket map that depicts various railroads, canals, and stage and steamboat routes through the Midwestern states. Along the foliate border, four vignettes appear at each corner, showing early views of Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. Published and reissued several times, Graff (1253) notes that it was originally issued in 1839 as Phelps & Ensign's Traveller's Guide..., although Howes lists the above as the initial edition. RARE: According to online records, this is the first complete 1849 example sold since the Dush sale. Howes E-165; Phillips, p.899; Streeter, Michigan Bibliography 1604; Not in Sabin.
