RAND, MCNALLY & CO.'S INDEXED ATLAS OF THE WORLD CONTAINING LARGE SCALE MAPS…. Chicago: Rand, McNally & Company, 1882. Folio, 14.75" x 11.25". [6], 904, [1, ad] pp., replete with color maps (many double-page) included in pagination. Bound in original morocco stamped in gilt. ****** An impressive early Rand McNally atlas. Approximately two-thirds is devoted to the United States and its territories, some of which had yet to become states. Included here, for example, is map of the "Indian Territory" for Oklahoma, and the atlas ends with the territory of Alaska which had just been purchased from Russia 15 years prior. The maps are quite detailed (railroads, cities, etc.), and some states are illustrated by several maps showing different areas of those states (California and Texas, for example.) The maps are accompanied by various statistics such as population, religious denominations, and similar. A rare atlas, not often seen intact.
Condition Report: Spine and corners chipped/torn with loss, hinges cracked but boards still holding (fragile), general wear (scuffs, etc.) Contents clean overall, a few leaves with marginal small water-stains, one small corner-chip (no loss) one leaf partially detached and with edges a bit frayed, first and last couple of pages rather loose but holding, one of the double-page maps with 6" closed tear along fold.
