Mapuche Macun Poncho, Chile or Argentina, 20th C. Size: 4'7'' x 4'2'' (140 x 127 cm). Tightly spun and woven sheep's wool poncho used by the leadership in Mapuche gathering and ritual. The Mapuche ranged throughout Patagonia and famously resisted both Inca and later Spanish colonial incursion to their territory and they went to battle wearing such Indigo ikat ponchos displaying a fundamental icon seen in petroglyph and portable stone carving. This single panel warp faced power cloth has a discontinuously woven neck slit with inserted, supplemental weft reinforcements.
