Mapuche Macun Poncho, Chile or Argentina, 20th C.

[ translate ]

Mapuche Macun Poncho, Chile or Argentina, 20th C. Wool. Size: 4'4'' x 4'4'' (132 x 132 cm). The rarer red variant of the characteristic men's leadership poncho in a single warp faced wool fabric. These durable cloths were an indispensable need to survive in wet, windy and cold Patagonia and so are constructed to be water and wind proof. A Mapuche weaving variation is the use of multiple wefts which are braided along the outer selvages as an edge protector. Unlike Andean weaving with its finished ends and woven fringes, the Mapuche cut the cloth from the loom at each end and braid the desired fringe.
