Mapuche Stone Tobacco Pipe

Pre-Columbian, southwestern Argentina or south-central Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A hefty pipe meant for smoking tobacco that is hand-carved from hardstone of a lustrous brown hue. The front of the rectangular pipe has a conical mouthpiece with a ventilation hole on top, an ovoid receptacle with a tall rim, and an upward-slanting handle. Size: 4.625" L x 2.1" H (11.7 cm x 5.3 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955 to 2006
