Very rare bas-relief depicting St. George in the act of killing the Dragon, in Rubbio Marble, completely worked and hand carved with absolute care and precision. Very particular for the shape, the dimensions and for the fact that the Saint is not depicted on horseback but standing with the spear in his hands!Part of a couple, it was placed side by side with another work depicting St. Michael. Placed on the back wall of the presbytery of a private chapel in Venice, then moved to a private home, at the end of the 18th century. The veining and patina of the marble, a real Favor.Of excellent workmanship and high quality craftsmanship, a lot more unique than rare. Perfect proportions, generously sized sculpture and appropriate weight, however all this makes this masterpiece unique and exclusive of its kind. To underline the attention to detail and details (incredible finesse of the face, hands, clothes, face and anatomy in general), the majesty of the creation transmits strength and light.Optimal if hung on the wall.Legend has it that this Saint killed the monster because the latter with his breath killed people, he asked in exchange to the citizens to convert and baptize themselves.It works with obvious allegorical messages, the victory of good over evil.On the bottom a Latin engraving identifies the title of the work.It's in excellent condition, intact.
