Marc Chagall (1887–1985)
Sketch for the lithograph M. 309, The Discovery of Daphnis by Lamon (Daphnis and Chloe, 1961) 1956–1961 Dry pastel and graphite on paper, 29.1 x 19.1 cm Provenance: > Gift from the artist to Tériade
> Private bequest from Alice Tériade, 2007
> Private collection, Paris
This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Marc Chagall Committee dated December 18, 2025. This rare pastel offers insight into Marc Chagall’s creative process for one of the pinnacles of his graphic work: the illustrations for Longus’s pastoral novel, *Daphnis and Chloe*, published by Tériade in 1961. Through vibrant and luminous pastel strokes, dominated by that azure blue so characteristic of the master, Chagall sketches with immense poetry the scene of the shepherd Lamon’s discovery of the child Daphnis. The fluidity of his brushwork, the freshness of the spring colors, and the lightness of the forms reveal the dreamlike and timeless world of the artist at the height of his maturity. This preparatory work offers an intimate and direct glimpse into the creation of one of the most famous and sought-after lithography series of the 20th century.
