Marc Chagall (French, 1887-1985), Le Cirque Rouge et Bleu, Color Lithograph, 26/50
Marc Chagall (French, born Belarus, 1887-1985) was one of the most influential modern artists of the twentieth century, celebrated for a highly personal visual language combining vivid color, dreamlike imagery, Jewish folklore, biblical subjects, memory, and scenes of everyday life. Working across painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, sculpture, book illustration, and stage design, Chagall developed a distinctive style that drew from modernist movements including Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism while remaining independent of any single school. Printmaking became an especially important part of his career, and he produced more than one thousand lithographs as well as major illustrated book projects devoted to biblical and literary subjects. His works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and National Gallery of Art.
Circus Horse and Rider, color lithograph on paper depicting a lively circus scene centered on a red horse and rider, surrounded by performers, spectators, acrobats, musicians, and figures rendered in vivid red, blue, green, yellow, and pink tones. The densely populated composition reflects Chagall's recurring fascination with the circus and its dreamlike mixture of spectacle, movement, and fantasy. This impression is signed in pencil "Marc Chagall" at lower right and numbered 26/50 in pencil at lower left. The frame measures approximately 36.75 x 31.25 inches, and the visible artwork measures approximately 27.5 x 21 inches. The lithograph appears to be in good overall condition with strong color and no obvious major tears, losses, or staining visible within the image area. The work has not been examined out of the frame. The gilt frame shows light surface wear consistent with age.
