Marc Chagall Signed Postcard Depicting "Les Clowns" Plus A Bonus TLS from His Second Wife Vava!

Two items relating to Russian-French artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985): a postcard depicting one of Chagall's colorful works signed by the artist; as well as what is most likely the original transmittal typed letter signed by his wife Vava and sent to the postcard recipient in 1954. Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A color postcard signed and inscribed by Marc Chagall as "Marc Chagall / 1954. / Vence" along the bottom margin recto. The artist's name, work title, and reproduction rights information is printed on the blank reverse. A tiny red scuff located in the left margin outside of the image mentioned just for accuracy, else near fine. 4.125" x 5.875."

2. A 1p typed letter in French signed by Chagall's second wife Valentina "Vava" Brodsky Chagall (ca. 1905-1993) as "V. Chagall" near lower right. Written at Les Collines, Vence, France on February 3, 1954 on a single leaf of "'Les Collines' / Vence / (A.M.)" letterhead. Expected folds and a wrinkled right edge. Partly triple hole punched at left. Else near fine. 8.25" x 10.625."

Addressed to Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003), an amateur autograph collector from Chicago, and translated in part:

"I thank you for your letters and I hasten to excuse myself for not having responded earlier, [as] unfortunately I misplaced your address.

I take advantage of the occasion to send you stamps and I add to my letter a postcard of my husband's that he wanted to sign for your son…"

Marc Chagall was an abstract artist who embraced all media from paintings, prints, and ceramics to stained glass, tapestries, and stage sets. Chagall's work is characterized by its dreamlike and vibrantly colored abstract representations of daily life, like his "Paris Through the Window" (1913).

Chagall lived in Vence and in nearby Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the Alpes-Maritimes region of southern France between circa 1949 and his death in 1985. He purchased a country home called "Les Collines" where he lived and worked well into his 90s. Fellow modern artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso also called this part of the Côte d'Azur home.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
