Marc Chagall's Wife Signs a New Year's Note on Behalf of Her Husband on a Postcard Depicting "Au Café"

A color postcard signed and inscribed in French by Valentina "Vava" Brodsky Chagall (ca. 1905-1993), the second wife of Russian-French artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). The inscription is as follows: "Bonne année -- / merci pour vos voeux / MaV. Chagall / 'Les Collines' Vence A.M." in the message and address sections verso. [Trans: Happy New Year -- / thanks for your wishes / Ma[rc]V[ava]. Chagall / 'The Hills' Vence A[lpes] M[aritimes]. N.d. The artist's name, work title, and reproduction rights information is printed on the reverse. Near fine. 4.125" x 5.875." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Marc Chagall was an abstract artist who embraced all media from paintings, prints, and ceramics to stained glass, tapestries, and stage sets. Chagall's work is characterized by its dreamlike and colorful abstract representations of daily life, like his "Paris Through the Window" (1913).

Chagall lived in Vence and in nearby Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the Alpes-Maritimes region of southern France between circa 1949 and his death in 1985. He purchased a country home called "Les Collines" where he lived and worked well into his 90s. Fellow modern artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso also called this part of the Côte d'Azur home.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
