Marc Davis (1913-2000)

[ translate ]

Marc Davis Garden of Eden Published Original Oil Painting (Walt Disney, 1977). "A different technique was employed in this painting to try to capture the mystery of New Guinea." Contrasting significantly with the series of watercolor paintings inspired by Papua New Guinea, this is a stunning oil-on-canvas painting by Disney Legend Marc Davis (1913 - 2000). In the mid to late 1970s, Marc and Alice Davis took formative trips to the island, drawn by the native art and design unlike anything they had seen. In an interview with John Canemaker, Marc described Papuan art as "the vitality of shape and form. It has an inventiveness of design like no other art in the world." Inspired by his experiences, Marc Davis created a large series of paintings for an ultimately unpublished book project titled The Bite of the Crocodile, all of which rendered in ink and watercolor. It is believed only three paintings inspired by Papua New Guinea were created in oil on canvas, and this incredible piece is one of them, titled Garden of Eden. It is prominently featured on page 178 of the book Marc Davis: Walt Disney's Renaissance Man. Marc Davis selected this painting for inclusion in the Art of Marc Davis exhibit at the Howard Lowery Gallery in Burbank, CA, which ran from 12/15/1993 to 1/28/1994. It was also included in the exhibit The Fine Art of Marc Davis at the Forest Lawn Museum, which ran from 5/8/2009 to 7/26/2009 (prints from the programs of each exhibit are included in this lot). In addition, this rare find was chosen by Marc Davis for his Fine Art portfolio, in which 32 fine art giclées were created from the original work for galleries and museums. This highly coveted published original is signed by the artist and framed with a mat window size of 15" x 19" and an overall frame size of 25.75" x 26.5". All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. It was displayed in the home of Marc and Alice Davis for many years. Minimal handling, and the condition is Very Good.
