Marcel Breuer was hired by Bryn Mawr College in 1938 to design his first American furniture commission: an entire suite for a new dormitory building, which included this type of chair. An example of this chair is found in museum collections including Harvard Art Museums (accession 1999.188.3) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (accession 2000.390).
