Putnam Margaret Putnam was self-taught and started out as a commercial artist working in fashion illustration in St. Louis, Missouri. She started exhibiting her own work in the 1950s after her move to San Antonio, Texas where she garnered many awards for her artwork. Putnam also explored materials such as wax resist, casein and pastel creating watercolor and wax resist with scoring technique. She continued to paint every day even after becoming partially paralyzed due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
