Note:
The 19th century Dutch flower painter Margaretha Roosenboom grew up in a family of artists; while she had her first painting lessons from her father, Johannes Roosenboom, she was taught the art of watercolour by her grandfather, Andreas Schelfhout. Roosenboom preferred painting flowers in their most natural state, casually put down in a bunch on a fresh floor or stone plinth, or, as can be seen from this work on offer, beautifully arranged in a vase. Often a specific type of flower, usually a rose (what's in a name), served as the focal point of her paintings and watercolours, always depicted in warm tones and her distinctive use of colour. A contemporary of hers wrote: "Vermeer had his own blue... Rembrandt his golden colour spectrum, Margaretha Roosenboom her subtle distinctions, shining like pink pearls."
