María Blanchard was a Spanish artist who became a significant figure in the Parisian art scene of the early 20th century. She settled permanently in Paris in 1918, and her participation in the Salon des Indépendants in 1921 brought her wider recognition, consolidating her position within the international avant-garde.
The present painting was exhibited at Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels in 1947. Founded in 1912, the gallery established itself as one of Belgium’s leading art venues during the first half of the 20th century.
Young children were a recurring subject in Blanchard’s work. In the present painting, a child who, just a moment earlier, was absorbed in playing with a rattle suddenly looks up and meets the viewer’s gaze. This direct, attentive look lends the composition a particular sense of immediacy and intimacy, establishing a quiet yet compelling connection between the child and the viewer.
