…The connection with the world of Greek mythology is also evoked when the artist’s own body, resembling a statue yet endowed with a surface made flesh, emerges from the sea in proportions that appear monumental in relation to its surroundings (Bathing near Cyclades, p. 77). Maria Lassnig gazes about her with a questioning expression, as though she must first find her bearings anew within this world. A comparable conception of the artist’s own body has already been encountered in the self-portraits with animals.

Excerpt from: Maria Lassnig, ed. By the Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna, and the Kärntner Landesgalerie, Klagenfurt
Ritter Verlag, 1988, pp. 33-34

In the depth of my being, deep down inside, I have always known that I’m good.
And I thought to myself, I just don’t understand why others don’t notice it.
