Marilyn Monroe Manuscript Page re: Actors Studio & Lee Strasberg! 130+ Words In Her Hand
Manuscript
A manuscript statement from actress Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) in which she offers insight on her time with Lee Strasberg and the Actors Studio. 1p of yellow lined paper, measuring 8.5" x 10", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1956]. Likely penned during the filming of Bus Stop (1956) while Monroe was still an "observer student", the page consists of over 130 words in her hand with extensive revisions and deletions throughout. Accompanied by a typed clerical transcription produced by Monroe's publicist Pat Newcomb (b. 1930), directly quoting her and marked "IMPORTANT - NOT TO BE ALTERED IN ANY RESPECT." Expected wear including scattered creases and offset toning, with isolated staple punctures in the top left. Uneven tearing along bottom margin, not affecting text. Otherwise, very good with fantastic contents!
In full:
"Question - What effect did the actors studio have on my acting?
Answer - Since attending the the actors studio as an observer student and since becoming a member of one of Mr. Lee Strassberg's [sic] private classes - I am learning a way to work. The actors studio is fortuate [sic] in having as one of its directors - Mr. Strassberg - who conducts the classes for actors - Mr. Strassberg's way of working is not only the tried and true methods and techniques of his own experience but his work also represents the experiments and works of actors and people who have had the interest to have the interest in the theater since the time of [Konstantin] Stanislavsky.
Yes I am going back as an observer and eventually would like to audition for membership."
After founding her own production company - Marilyn Monroe Productions - in 1955, she briefly relocated to Manhattan to study acting. It was during this time that she attended workshops on method acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Monroe grew close with Lee and his wife, Paula, whom she later hired as an acting coach.
Patricia "Pat" Newcomb first represented Monroe as her publicist in 1956, during the filming of Bus Stop. She was later replaced, but rehired in 1960. Newcomb accompanied Monroe to many events, including President Kennedy's birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962, where she performed "Happy Birthday, Mr. President". Newcomb would remain her publicist up until Monroe's death that August, and indeed, was among the last people to see the actress alive following an argument at her home.
