Marine telescope, H. Hughes, London - Brass - Early 19th century

H. Hughes telescope 1838-1879. It is an achromatic portable telescope that was used to make general observations on the deck of a ship. It has a leather-covered conical barrel and brass fittings, including a single draw tube and a swivel eyepiece cover. The manufacturer's name is inscribed on the draw tube as 'H. HUGHES' 59 Fenchurch Street London, suggesting that the telescope was manufactured between 1838-1879. Total length with sun visor: 88 cm and with closed draw: 64 cm, eye diameter 6 cm, total weight 1. 100 kg. The leather near the large eyepiece is damaged but not loose.
