[ translate ]

Mario Avati (French, born Monaco, 1921–2009) was a painter and printmaker active in Paris and best known for his mastery of mezzotint, a demanding intaglio process highlighting shape and light. Avati became one of the major modern practitioners of the medium, often using still-life subjects, eggs, fruit, shells, objects, and dark staged interiors to create quiet, surreal compositions. His work is represented in major print collections including the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Fruits et pichet is a 1966 mezzotint in black on wove paper. The composition presents a pedestal bowl filled with a pear and rounded fruit, accompanied by a tall cylindrical vessel and a broad pitcher decorated with a cutout leaf motif. The objects are modeled in softly graduated light against a deep black background. Inscribed in pencil “ÉPREUVE D’ARTISTE VIII/X” lower left, titled “FRUITS ET PICHET” lower center, and signed and dated “AVATI ’66” lower right, denoting this as artist’s proof 8 of 10. Sheet measures approximately 18.875 x 14.75 inches; image measures approximately 10.375 x 8.5 inches. Condition shows light overall and mat toning, minor handling and marginal wear, and faint scattered marks; full margins with deckled edges; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
