[ translate ]

Mario Avati (French, born Monaco, 1921–2009) was a painter and printmaker active in Paris and best known for his mastery of mezzotint, a demanding intaglio process highlighting shape and light. Avati became one of the major modern practitioners of the medium, often using still-life subjects, eggs, fruit, shells, objects, and dark staged interiors to create quiet, surreal compositions. His work is represented in major print collections including the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

La Perle is a 1969 color mezzotint depicting a bouquet of multicolored roses in a cylindrical vase beside a metal bench vise holding a luminous white pearl, all set against a dark background. Signed and dated in pencil “AVATI ’69” lower right, titled “LA PERLE” lower center, and inscribed “ESSAI 3/9” lower left, denoting trial proof 3 of 9 outside the regular edition. Sheet measures approximately 14.8125 x 18.75 inches. Image measures approximately 9.375 x 11.5 inches. Condition appears good overall, with full margins, light handling wear, minor sheet toning and marks, and scattered faint surface abrasions visible within the dark printed field; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
