\Artist: Mario Balassi (1604 - 1667)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 70_10_60_cm
Mario Balassi (Florence, 1604 – 1667) Autoritratto Oil on canvas, 45 x 34 – Expertise: Prof. Ferdinando Arisi Frame size: approx. 60 x 49 x 5 cm. BROWSE CATALOGUE (copy link) : https: //www. sfogliami. it/fl/241189/3tv3uqgjenr7xrk8cdpd6ttj35dy417#page/20 Please note: Publication of the catalogue of works from the Intermidiart collection. Expertise by Ferdinando Arisi. With certificate of warranty and lawful origin. Artwork with gilded and carved frame (with flaws) : The painting, with brushstrokes full of light against a dark background, shows a three-quarter-length portrait of a young man with regular features, half-length, looking at the viewer. Clad in a sober black dress with a white collar, the figure is characterised by the descriptive immediacy of the face, in which the regular nose, the harmonious arch of the eyebrows, the cheeks and the mouth surrounded by a moustache and a hint of a goatee are strikingly highlighted. The specific execution, style and descriptive immediacy of the figure make it possible to convincingly assign the painting, an oil on canvas, to Mario Balassi's corpus as a self-portrait. The painting under examination here has been traced back to the works of Mario Balassi (Florence, 1604 - 1667) by the well-known historian Ferdinando Arisi. Balassi was a Florentine artist and disciple of Jacopo Ligozzi, Matteo Rosselli and Passignano. In this rare self-portrait, he takes from his masters a sober and balanced composition, as well as the use of soft, muted colours, typical of the 17th-century Florentine school. The historian with an Expertise - written to the owners - states: " . . . This splendid portrait (oil on canvas, 0. 46 x 0. 34 m) is the self-portrait of Mario Balassi (Florence, 1604 - 1667) , much better than the one in the Uffizi (in. A. 46) , which, however, is contemporary (the artist is in fact showing the same age) . The one kept in the Uffizi is in rather poor condition, reduced on all four sides and in a less-than-perfect state of preservation; this one is also more lively because the painter has presented himself with his inspired eyes towards the mirror, in a more natural attitude. It should be dated in the decade 1640-1650 . . . ' (From the Expertise by Prof. Ferdinando Arisi) . With regard to its state of preservation, the canvas is in fair general condition considering the period of the painting; the pictorial surface is in patina. There are some scattered signs of restoration, peeling and oxidation of the surface. There are no serious conservation problems. In natural light, there is a fine craquelure consistent with the painting’s age. Canvas size: 45 x 34 cm. The painting is sold with a gilded frame (frame dimensions: approx. 60 x 49 x 5 cm, with flaws) . Origin: private collection. Publication: \tunpublished; \t. I miti e il territorio nella Sicilia dalle mille culture. “INEDITA QUADRERIA” general catalogue of the paintings in the collection of the series “I Miti e il territorio”, 2nd edition, Editore Lab_04, Marsala, 2022. We guarantee accurate packaging with outer wooden crate and inner bubble wrap / cardboard / polystyrene (packaging cost: approximately €100. 00) and tracked shipping (€100. 00 Italy) .
