BROWSE CATALOGUE (copy link) : https: //www. sfogliami. it/fl/241189/3tv3uqgjenr7xrk8cdpd6ttj35dy417#page/126 Please note: Publication of the catalogue of works from the Intermidiart collection. Artwork signed on bottom right. With certificate of warranty and lawful origin. With gilded and decorated frame “. . . Very valuable work for its artistic and economic value, made by the well-known artist Mario Mirabella (Palermo, 1870-1931) , considered one of the greatest Sicilian masters of the nineteenth century in Italy. The painting - in good visual condition - depicts a classical subject in the artist’s iconography of that period. The canvas represents a beautiful view of the gulf of Palermo with the picturesque Monte Pellegrino in the background and on the left a small stretch of rocks of the coast near Romagnolo, in front of which fishing boats have stopped. In the wide-ranging view, the silhouette of the mountain hit by the morning sun’s rays appears lit by a rosy light that detaches it from the background of a blue sky crossed by clouds that are the symbol of an enchanting beautiful day. At the same time, the gradations of the colour of the sea in the foreground change from the intense blue of the farthest stretch to lighter shades as you approach the shore, and they light up with whitish reflections where the sun is reflected on the sea. This is certainly a work worthy of the lesson of the great master Francesco Lojacono, probably made in 1900 ca. The artist adheres totally to the naturalism of the master following his schemes and luminist effects, and like other Sicilian pupils, he takes up themes already addressed by him (Bruno, “Tre Generazioni di Pittori”, “I Mirabella una famiglia di pittori a Palermo”, Elledizioni, Elledizioni 2001 (pp. 21-37) . “The constant exercise of the study from life of Lojacono led him to wander in the most fascinating places in Sicily, also going as far as the Neapolitan coast itinerary. The same stages were then retraced and reproposed on canvas by his own pupils, when they did not visit those places following the master”) without straying in the least from those pictorial schemes, nor indulging in the just fragmented painting made of very short touches of colour that Lojacono would later adopt when making (perhaps at the request of the client) the works of the Sinatra collection. On the other hand, this defined type of “captivating landscape painting” followed by Lojacono and his school, first of all Mario Mirabella, was the one most requested by the good Sicilian middle-class society, and he seems to adhere to the prototypes of the master also in the choice of horizontal formats for his views. This painting seems to be inspired by Francesco Lojacono’s works, such as “Monte Pellegrino” (fig. 17a) (oil on canvas, “Monte Pellegrino”, 42 x 82 cm, private collection, signed “F. Lojacono” on bottom right, published in “Maestri dell’Ottocento Italiano”, Bottega Antica, 1990, p. 47) , a subject that the latter repeatedly made, being a theme dear to him. Mario Mirabella made several versions of the theme of the gulf of Palermo, all with slight variations, which were immediately and considerably successful with the public. One of them was “Veduta di Monte Pellegrino” (fig. 17b) (“Veduta di Monte Pellegrino”, private collection in Palermo, oil on canvas, 52 x 100 cm; published in Bruno 2001, p. 44, plate IV) and it’s very close to this work. If he did not technically reach the levels of accurate and sharp analysis of reality of his master, he appears an extraordinary artist and interpreter of Sicilian landscapes today more than in the past, and he is also highly regarded and sought-after; his misfortune, like that of other contemporary Sicilian artists, was perhaps to have fully adhered to the pictorial style of his master, accepted and praised during his life by public and critics, a master who, with his innate talent, certainly and involuntarily ended up obscuring or reducing remarkable painting personalities that gravitated around him (Ref. Bibliography: “Maestri dell’Ottocento Siciliano tra Collezionismo ed Antiquariato V”, Antonello Governale, Altamura Editrice, Palermo 2007, in Mario Mirabella, “Veduta del golfo di Palermo con Monte Pellegrino”, p. 54) . A work of good pictorial quality made with attention to details. In good condition. The surface has a patina on the paint; in addition, in low sunlight you can see the features of the spread colours and the direction of brush strokes. A work of very good artistic and chromatic quality, in good condition with signs of ageing, as shown in the photos. On bottom right there is the artist’s signature (see photos) . The work comes from a purchase in an important antique shop, so it comes with certificate of lawful origin. The painting, of good pictorial quality, has a beautiful oil gilded frame. The painting has traces of dirt due to ageing, signs that prove the age of the work. Painting with a good size and pleasant for decor, for antique dealers and collectors. Its average market value ranges between €5,000 and €25,000. The painting comes with a certificate of lawful origin. Any customs fees shall be borne by the recipient. Origin: private collection in Sicily. Publication: \tunpublished; \t. I miti e il territorio nella Sicilia dalle mille culture. “INEDITA QUADRERIA” general catalogue of the paintings in the collection of the series “I Miti e il territorio”, 2nd edition, Editore Lab_04, Marsala, 2022.
