Open, curious, always on the move, and driven to reinvent himself- Schifano’s artistic work can be described as a perpetual cycle of renewal. He himself put it this way: ‘every two years, I felt the need to revolutionize my work in order to invent something new. In fact, I haven’t destroyed anything; my works are always a further development of the previous ones’.
(…) Between painting, photography and film, Schifano created a body of work that transcends the boundaries of media and radically questions the perception of images.

He understood his art as an open, ongoing project fed by and flowing back into reality. Schifano described himself most aptly: ‘I really painted as I am. And I’m not always the same. Someone said that my work is a “never ending tour”, a kind of “meta-work” where you don’t know where it begins and even less where it ends. It is endless because it does not originate in me but in reality. I absorb everything and give everything back”.
This attitude is precisely what makes his work so enduringly relevant: in a world characterized by an endless flood of images, Schifano’s work is like a mirror of our present.
