Mark Twain, Captain Stormfield Visit to Heaven 1927

[ translate ]

Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven, by Mark Twain, later printing of the first edition, published by Harper and Brothers, New York, copyright, 1909 by Mark Twain Company, Harper code 'E-B' [May 1927].

Hard boards with black lettering and Captain Stormfield aboard his comet 'Space Ship' on both boards [both boards are foxed: see photos]; original black cloth spine and corners; paper label on spine, 5" x 8", slightly stained endpapers, frontispiece picture of Captain Stormfield aboard his comet 'Space Ship' by Albert Levering; 121 pages + the list of MT's books, very good condition.

This classic satire of the 'Captain's Log' genre in which Stormfield dies and passes through the pearly gates "whizzing through space like a comet!" was the last book Twain published during his lifetime; he worked on the story for almost forty years. Two chapters from the middle of the novel were finally published in Harper's Monthly in December 1907 and January 1908 and collected in book form the following year. Combining science fiction with a satiric look at conventional views of the afterlife, Twain delivers his amusing and trenchant commentary on human vanity.

US: Priority (c.2-4 days) ----------- $9.50
Canada: 1st Class (c.2-6 weeks) ---- $22.50
World: 1st Class (c.2-8 weeks) ----- $31.50
