"English As She Is Taught" by Mark Twain. With Biographical Sketch of Author by Matthew Irving Lans, published by Mutual Book Company, Boston, 1900. First American edition and first separate edition of Twain's short work on English grammar. Second issue with "five" corrected from "fivc" on page 16, line 5 [BAL 3465].

Hard boards, original olive cloth, both boards have identical decoration and lettering in black and red; c.5" x 7.1/2"; "Anna Kelley" is pencil written on the front endpaper [endpapers are creased at the hinges], long ink written text opposite to the title page, no half-title page as issued, 28 pages + one-page ad, very good condition. See photos.

"High and fine literature is wine," Twain once wrote, "and mine is only water; but everybody likes water."
