A rambling reminiscence of the authors journey by overland stage from Missouri to Nevada, together with his sojourns in the latter state, California, and the Hawaiian Islands, in the course of which a projected trip of three months lengthened to one of seven years! The authors delightful humor has taken in its stride "the eternal Spring of San Francisco," the deathless Summer of the Sacramento Valley, "Twain's literary labors for the Golden Era and the Californian, pocket mining" in old Tuolumne, and has endeared him to all confirmed Californians with perhaps the finest and certainly one of the best known descriptions of Mono Lake..."
