"The Prince and the Pauper. A Tale For Young People of All Ages", by Mark Twain, illustrated, published by Charles Webster, 1892, first printing of the Popular Edition [the second edition after the first edition published by Osgood in 1882].

"Pronounced by high authorities one of the best child's stories ever written."

Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. The prince, mistaken for Tom, is forced to live a pauper's life, while Tom unwillingly takes on the life of a prince. And in the end, each boy finds the king inside himself.
