Märklin, Göppingen – large painted tinplate four-wheel rolli...
Märklin, Göppingen – large painted tinplate four-wheel rolling ship stand or 'carpet' trolley for a battleship, German, circa 1900–1910, a rare early German painted tinplate wheeled ship cradle or carpet-running trolley, made to support one of Märklin's substantial pond-going battleships and warships, probably dating from the opening years of the twentieth century, of elongated open-frame construction, approximately 670 mm long × 170 mm wide, the stand is formed with longitudinal metal members joined to substantial transverse end sections, each end fitted with raised shaped supports intended to cradle the hull of the ship, four small spoked metal wheels permit the complete vessel to be rolled across the floor, converting the associated floating warship into what contemporary terminology would effectively regard as a carpet toy when out of the water, the surfaces painted in dark green / black, slender diagonal metal bracing stabilises the unusually long frame.Provenance: acquired from David Pressland; formerly associated with a Märklin battleship in his ownership/dealing stock. Subsequently separated from the battleship when the ship itself was sold.
