Markus Lüpertz studied at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld and briefly at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, where he later served as rector from 1988 to 2009. Lüpertz's works often show an expressive gesture and oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Markus Lüpertz is also considered one of the most famous German artists of the present time because of his self-portrayal as a painter prince. He lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf and Florence.
