Marquise Gold by Tiffany and Co. Sterling Silver Flatware Set Service Vermeil

Marquise was designed by paulding farnham for tiffany & co. And introduced in the year 1902 and patented in 1904. The handle terminal is a design of an elongated shield with a simple, delicate, beaded border. Some interpret the design as a version of "coffin end", which is a squared off end and canted sides giving the handle a coffin-like profile. The origin of the name is obscure, as marquise is the title given to a wife or widow of a marquis which is a nobleman. It is unknown if farnham had a particular marquise in mind when making the pattern. George paulding farnham (1859-1927) was born in new york city. His aunt married charles t cook, who assumed presidency of tiffany after the death of charles l tiffany in 1902. Farnham attended tiffany school and was trained by edward c moore and charles gosjean. He stayed with tiffany and eventually became a board member in 1888 and in 1893 was appointed chief designer and head of jewelry later also assuming the role of artistic director of the silver department as well. His flatware designs were similar to jewelry designs, very ornate, elaborate, and in "beaux arts" tradition. He created six full sterling lines for tiffany during his time, before leaving tiffany in 1908. Lovely marquise gold by tiffany and co. Sterling silver flatware set - 24 pieces.
