Marten van Cleve, attributed to - The Couple
Marten van Cleve, attributed to
The Couple
Oil on panel (doubled up). 22.5 x 29.5 cm.
This scene shows a prostitute receiving a gold chain for her services. The addition of a jug as a symbol of her sinful life and for drunkenness, as well as the owl, which in painting is sometimes considered the companion of the prostitute, leave no doubt that the painter wished to create a morally didactic genre picture, in order to expose human vice and weaknesses in a humorous and instructive way.
Provenance
In a German private collection since 1988.
