A selection of bespoke designed textiles
To include a hand-stitched black and white cushion decorated with the artist's initials, 25cm x 23.5cm; a silk screenprint of two ladies, 23cm x 15cm; two black and white cotton fragments printed with drawings of women, together with a small preliminary sketch by Battersby; and a brass belt buckle in the form of a bird carrying a letter (6)
Quite the polymath, Battersby turned his hand to many aspects of the decorative and theatrical art world in his role as designer, decorator, artist, and historian. In the 1960s he opened his own boutique and printing studio, Sphinx Studio, in Brighton where he experimented and sold his works. The present lot includes examples which were likely to have been produced here.
