Martin Branner (1888-1970)
Martin Branner and Max Van Bibber Winnie Winkle Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 6 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1921-1971). Call it Winnie Winkle through the Ages, and you won't be far off the mark: This compact selection captures Branner's historic feature in a brisk evolutionary arc -- one of the first to portray a career-bound woman as the protagonist. Three water-stained but intact pieces represent the 1920s and 1930s (5-11-21, 5-13-21, and 7-11-32). The sequence skips ahead to the 1950s with examples dated 9-25-53 (light surface-toning) and 12-23-57 (more deeply toned). A further skip to the 1970s finds Branner's successor, Max Van Bibber, carrying on in the familar style. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 18" x 5" to 19.5" x 6". Conditions range from Good to Very Good. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
