Autograph endorsement as president, signed by Van Buren with his initials, "M. V. B.," on the reverse of a manuscript DS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, December 12, 1838. Van Buren's handwritten endorsement: "With the President's best respects & a request that Mr. Fairfield will send the written to Chief Justice‰Û_after he has perused it himself." The document consists of a list of facts sent to Secretary of War Joel R. Poinsett by John James Abert, the commander of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, who requests that several suspended nominations be reexamined. In very good to fine condition, with old tape along splitting to the folds and the hinge.
