Mary Blair (1911-1978)

[ translate ]

Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Alice and Frogs Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "Goodness. When I get home, I shall write a book about this place." Alice encounters frogs in the Tulgey Wood in this fantastic original concept/color key painting by the hand of Disney Legend Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). This is a fascinating alternate take on the moments seen at the 51:11 mark of Alice in Wonderland (the frogs in the film are part musical instrument). In addition, the trees with contradictory signs appear much earlier, at the 38:39 mark. This rare painting is an exciting look at what might have been, with elements dispersed into parts throughout Walt Disney's surreal masterpiece. Mary Blair exhibits her signature sense of whimsy with bold colors and expressive characters in minimal brushstrokes. A similar image can be seen in the book Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland, retold by Jon Scieszka using original concept art by Mary Blair. The piece is rendered in gouache on 9.5" x 9" board. Minor studio handling and edge wear with pinholes in corners, and the condition is Very Good. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
