Known for: Sea-landscape and some genre-figure painting
Biography: Painter Mary Cable Butler was born and raised in Uwchlan, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed extensive training in art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, graduating in 1894; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1896-1902; and Academie Colarossi, Paris. While Mary Butler summered in Maine and wintered in Philadelphia, she also traveled extensively. Some of her western paintings include Cathedral Rock from Kicking Horse, Capistrano, California and Canadian Rockies from Banff. All her career Butler promoted the arts in Philadelphia and maintained a relationship with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her first exhibit was in 1894 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and she continued to show there most years through 1946. Some of her other exhibits include the Plastic Club, Sears Roebuck and Company Art Galleries, the Philadelphia Water Color Club and the Corcoran Gallery. Mary Butler was honorary president of the Fellowship of the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts at the time of her death, March 16, 1946.
